If you’re thinking of buying a “smart” TV for the holidays, you ought to know that your new device is constantly capturing snapshots of what’s on screen and sending them back to the manufacturer — even if you are using the device as a computer monitor and not watching TV at all. The findings come from a recent study by computer scientists at the University of California, Davis; University College London; and Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, published in Proceedings of the 2024 ACM on Internet Measurement Conference.

��ϲ��Ͽ� Davis has enlisted as a Data Privacy Day Champion in support of the day’s three-pronged entreaty: Respect privacy, safeguard data and enable trust.

Our “champion” designation comes from the National Cyber Security Alliance, lead organizer of the international Data Privacy Day, which is coming up Tuesday (Jan. 28). Held on the same date every year, Data Privacy Day commemorates the signing of Convention 108, the first legally binding international treaty dealing with privacy and data protection, on Jan. 28, 1981.

Applications are being accepted for ��ϲ��Ͽ� Davis’ administrative advisory committees for 2016-17.

“I encourage you to become involved in issues affecting the ��ϲ��Ͽ� Davis community” by applying for committee membership, Chancellor Linda P.B. Katehi said in an email message.

The committees address topics such as arts, child and family care, diversity, student services and research, and provide an opportunity for all constituencies — Academic Senate and Academic Federation members, staff, graduate students and undergraduate students — to participate in governance of the campus.
