Sloan Grant Enhances STEM Faculty Diversity Efforts Amid Pandemic

The Center for the Advancement of Multicultural Perspectives on Science, or CAMPOS, recently secured a grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation to further advance STEM faculty diversity by assisting underrepresented minorities with research development and family care during and after the coronavirus pandemic.

The $250,000 award is for ENHANCE: Promoting Advancement and Retention of Underrepresented STEM Faculty by Enhancing Research Productivity and Centering Family Support.

Mariel Vazquez has been appointed as the new faculty director of the Center for the Advancement of Multicultural Perspectives on Science, or CAMPOS, succeeding the founding faculty director, Mary Lou de Leon Siantz, professor emeritus at the Betty Irene More School of Nursing.

“My vision for CAMPOS is centered in the success and retention of its scholars,” said Vazquez, whose appointment took effect Oct. 1.

Campus leaders made that clear during the induction ceremony for the university’s newest CAMPOS Faculty Scholars: Fawn A. Cothran, Wilsaan M. Joiner, Rose Kagawa and James A. Letts. They are new to ��ϲ��Ͽ� Davis, recruited by CAMPOS in its mission to change the face of STEM by building faculty diversity in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

But ��ϲ��Ͽ� Davis’ three new CAMPOS faculty scholars have at least one key thing in common: Marie Cuevas Heffern, Miriam A. Nuño and Kara Rudolph all work to promote diversity in the STEM fields — science, technology, engineering and math.

Some of Rebecca Calisi’s first lessons in animal science came from her experiences growing up on a cattle ranch along the Texas-Mexico border. There she learned about the mix of cattle known for their dairy production and ability to thrive in sweltering heat — a great dual-purpose animal.

Calisi, an assistant professor of neurobiology, physiology and behavior, previously had been afraid to talk about her upbringing in her lectures about animal behavior.

Chancellor Linda P.B. Katehi recently welcomed ��ϲ��Ͽ� Davis’ newest faculty members recruited here as CAMPOS scholars: Rebecca Calisi Rodríguez, Natalia Caporale, Juliana Maria Leite Nóbrega de Moura Bell, Fernanda Ferreira and Alexis Patterson.

They were the honored guests at a reception held Nov. 13 at the Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts. The five women comprise the university’s second class of CAMPOS Faculty Scholars.

Latina scientists recognized as CAMPOS scholars

The University of California, Davis, is building a core of Latina faculty in science, technology, engineering, social sciences and math to educate and inspire a new generation of Californians.

"There is a dearth of Latina STEM scientists in the nation, so the implications of having a critical mass at ��ϲ��Ͽ� Davis are huge," said Marylou de Leon Siantz, professor at the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing and founding director of the Center for Advancing Multicultural Perspectives on Science, part of the ADVANCE initiative at ��ϲ��Ͽ� Davis.
