Bringing COVID-19 Data into Focus

Using an approach based on computer vision technology, researchers can work back from COVID-19 mortality data to see how infection rates changed on the day a lockdown or similar measure was introduced. The approach could be generally useful in future epidemics and pandemics. The work is published July 14 in Science Advances.

One-Third of Long Beach COVID-19 Patients Have Long-COVID Symptoms

One-third of recovered COVID-19 patients reported new or continuing symptoms two months after their positive tests, according to a study by graduate students in epidemiology at the University of California, Davis, in collaboration with the Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services. Women, people over 39, people with preexisting conditions and Black/African American persons had enhanced rates of “long COVID” symptoms.

Genome Variation Gives Insight Into Coronavirus Spread

As SARS-CoV-2 has spread around the world, its transmission rate has varied alongside variations in its genome, according to researchers at the University of California, Davis. Surveillance of the virus genome may help public authorities target areas about to experience an upsurge of infection.
