Being a Hispanic/Latinx-identifying student at one of the largest ��ϲ��Ͽ�s has opened my eyes to the limitations we as a community face. ��ϲ��Ͽ� Davis being on the map as a federally recognized Hispanic Serving Institution means more diversity on our campus and support for students where their concerns are heard. ��ϲ��Ͽ� Davis becoming an HSI would help create a bridge to close the gap between low-income people of color and higher education.

The University of California, Davis, is now eligible to be one of the nation’s few research-intensive universities designated as a Hispanic-Serving Institution, or HSI, after fall enrollment numbers crossed the threshold for HSI status for the first time.

A series of five deaths in her extended family had devastated Jasmine Diaz, and the neurobiology, physiology and behavior major was on academic probation through 2022. She had given up her dream to become a doctor or even to continue in science.

Today, the fifth-year student is thrilled to be working in the cancer lab of Professor Luis Carvajal-Carmona, is recommitted to a career in science, and has a passion to help underrepresented and first-generation students.

The University of California, Davis, received more than $1 million in grants from the National Science Foundation to convene and engage faculty, researchers and industry experts in expanding research and undergraduate instruction at Hispanic Serving Institutions and Minority Serving Institutions, or HSIs and MSIs. The grants focus on computing fields identified as national priorities by the U.S. Office of Science and Technology Policy.

The Graduate School of Management received the grants.

“Join us for an afternoon of panels featuring scholars and experts speaking on topics related to what it might mean for ��ϲ��Ͽ� Davis to be Hispanic-serving — from defining the metrics to rethinking the classroom,” the organizers said.
