Wellman Hall reopened today (Sept. 12) after a weekend cleanup operation in connection with the possible release of asbestos fibers into the air. Allen Tollefson, assistant vice chancellor for Facilities Management, said all air samples had tested clear.
No one was injured, according to officials who became concerned Friday morning when someone inadvertently turned on a building fan 鈥 possibly allowing for the spread of asbestos fibers in and around a second-floor corridor. The corridor had been blocked off since 6:45 a.m., and the fan was supposed to have stayed off while workers removed old asbestos insulation in preparation for the installation of new, energy efficient valves for the heating system.
Campus authorities ordered the building's evacuation, and firefighters wore breathing apparatus as they made a sweep through the building to make sure it was clear. About 75 people left the building.
Environmental Health and Safety Services, and Facilities Management began the cleanup Friday afternoon.
Tollefson said work on the heating system overhaul would continue after a debriefing about the Friday incident.
