South Asian Awareness Week Makes Its Debut

April 26-April 30 and May 8 -- The South Asian Student Organization has developed its first week at °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê×ÊÁÏ¿â Davis to explore and educate about issues facing Americans with roots in India, Pakistan and six other countries in the South Asia region. The week begins at 10 a.m. April 26 with a cultural fair. Other highlights include a workshop about South Asians living in America and stereotypes that affect everyday lives; the screening of a documentary on hidden aspects of South Asia and of the popular-cultural film "American Desi" on April 27; a lecture about the effects of 9/11 and the value of hate-crime prevention by Asian American studies associate professor Sunaina Maira on April 28, followed by dance workshops that night; a fashion show of the colorful garments worn throughout the region on April 29 and a collection of documentaries that night; a conversation with South Asian American professionals about their professions on April 30; and a cultural show at the Mondavi Center May 8.
