SHARED SERVICE CENTER: Managers selected for payroll, HR, finance

The Shared Services Program Management Office today (Oct. 11) announced the appointment of three Davis campus staff members to be the managers of the first units in the shared service center:

Payroll — Teri Sugai, who now serves as the payroll manager in Administrative and Resource Management’s administrative services cluster “and brings extensive experience in ϲϿ Davis payroll processes to the new center.”

Human resources — Carolyn Warfield, who has “a wealth of experience in human resource issues from the private sector and at ϲϿ Davis through service to the Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts and the Offices of the Chancellor and Provost.

Finance — Rose Mary Miller, who now serves as chief administrative officer for the Hart Interdisciplinary Programs in Division of Humanities, Arts and Cultural Studies, within the College of Letters and Science. She brings more than 30 years of finance, budget and personnel experience to the center.

The shared service center is scheduled to open in mid-February with 72 full-time equivalent positions, handling selected business tasks for the campus’s administrative units. An unspecified number of information technology jobs associated with help desk functions and desktop support are due to be added to the center toward the end of March.

The Shared Services Program Management Office hopes to introduce the new managers at a brown bag meeting next week; the meeting is another in a series of shared service center updates for the campus community.

Here is the schedule through the end of the year: Thursday. Oct. 18; Tuesday, Nov. 10; and Thursday, Dec. 15. The brown bags run from noon to 1 p.m. in King Lounge in the Memorial Union. No preregistration necessary (seating is on a first-come, first-serve basis).

Jobs at ϲϿ Davis and beyond

The Career Catalyst Brown Bag Series continues next week with “Applying for Jobs at ϲϿ Davis.” Another workshop next week offers advice on searching for jobs at ϲϿ Davis and beyond.

“Applying for Jobs at ϲϿ Davis” — A Human Resources expert offers a “behind the scenes” tour of the employment application process, and tips on how to tailor your application materials so they showcase your experience and skills. The program also offers instruction in how to apply for job using the university’s PeopleAdmin software, and a demonstration of the software’s applicant tracking system. Plus, information about applicant resources and an opportunity to ask questions. Noon-1 p.m. Thursday (Oct. 20), Hamilton Room, Heitman Staff Learning Center. No pre-enrollment necessary.

“Job Search — ϲϿ Davis and Beyond” — This workshop, offering help to people who wish “to stand out in the crowd of applicants in today’s challenging job market,” is part of the Career Navigation Series. Individual sign-ups are being taken for each segment of the series; in other words, you can enroll in one segment, or two, or all of them.

According to Staff Development and Professional Services, the “Job Search” program offers methods and tips for improving your success in the job search process, and ways to accelerate and energize your search. The course description adds: “Learn about how to uncover the hidden job market and maximize your employment options.”

“Job Search — ϲϿ Davis and Beyond” is scheduled two more times: Tuesday (Oct. 18) and Tuesday, Nov. 8.

Other workshops in the series: “Telling Your Story,” “Resume Clinic,” “Interview Clinic” and “Experience ϲϿ Davis,” with the “Experience” program described as follows: “Sometimes getting to know other colleges, divisions or departments can make all the difference in how you navigate your career.”

Business Officer Institute

The Davis campus is calling for nominations for the next session of the ϲϿ Business Officer Institute. It is scheduled from Nov. 28 to Dec. 1 in Irvine.

Each ϲϿ unit — including the campuses and medical centers, and Agriculture and Natural Resources — solicits its own nominations. They must come from supervisors.

Eligibility extends to business officers with broad decision-making and/or supervisory responsibility or accountability for academic or administrative department for budget, finance, internal controls, human resources, systems or sponsored projects. Candidates must be classified at the Professional and Support Staff, or Managers and Senior Professionals levels.

The Office of the President covers all program and some meal costs (breakfast and lunch), as well as the opening dinner. ϲϿOP does not cover the cost of travel, hotel expenses of $132 per night, parking or dinners on Nov. 29 and 30.
