April 24, Tuesday -- Gordon L. Kane, author and Victor Weisskopf Professor of Physics at the University of Michigan, will speak about the latest developments in particle physics. In the next one or two years, using the new Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland, scientists may get evidence for an idea called "supersymmetry," which explains questions that the Standard Model of particle physics cannot answer. Kane will give an overview of what scientists hope to understand about the physical universe using the Standard Model, supersymmetry and string theory. Kane is the author of two books for a popular audience, "The Particle Garden" (Perseus Publishing, 1996) and "Supersymmetry: Unveiling the Ultimate Laws of Nature" (Perseus Publishing, 2000) as well as magazine articles, research papers and academic publications. His talk will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the ballroom of the Activities and Recreation Center on the °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê×ÊÁÏ¿â Davis campus. Kane's lecture is sponsored by the High Energy Frontier Theory Initiative and the °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê×ÊÁÏ¿â Davis Department of Physics. Admission is $7, free to students.
