Police carry out controlled explosions

Authorities tonight (Jan. 24) safely conducted small, controlled explosions of materials that campus police found while clearing out the chemistry lab of a suspect arrested in connection with a Jan. 17 explosion on campus. The materials have been rendered harmless.

ϲϿ Davis issued a WarnMe alert to advise members of the campus community that they might hear explosive sounds between 6 and 8 p.m. as the Yolo County Bomb Squad and other agencies used “thermal treatment” to render the materials safe. The controlled explosions took place in an unpopulated area of campus.

David Snyder, a junior specialist in the Department of Chemistry, was arraigned this afternoon on 10 felony charges related to the Jan. 17 explosion in his apartment in the Russell Park apartment complex on campus. Snyder remains in the Yolo County Jail, in lieu of $2 million bail; a bail hearing is set for Feb. 8.

The lab Snyder used in the Chemistry Annex building was inspected after the Jan. 17 incident and locked. Removal of Snyder’s materials began this morning and is now complete.

Authorities are not releasing information about the nature of the materials, due to an ongoing criminal investigation into the incident.

WarnMe is the campus’s emergency notification system. Members of the campus community can update their contact information at .
