No Relationship Between Crime and Employment?

Nov. 5, Friday -- Contrary to popular belief, it could be that growing up and getting a job may not cure young criminals, according to visiting sociologist Chris Uggen of the University of Minnesota. He will address "Illegal Earnings Imperatives" as part of a series at °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê×ÊÁÏ¿â Davis on The Determinants of Economic Success. Using his research about criminals and former criminals, Uggen will discuss how subsidized jobs affect the likelihood of people turning back to crime. He concludes that whatever propels youths to settle down into adulthood may not be the same reason that they stop committing crimes. The talk will be held 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the Ag History Conference Room, 5214 Social Sciences and Humanities Building.
