Field hockey team to get new field

Director of Athletics Terry Tumey says the women鈥檚 field hockey program will have a new, $3.2 million field by the start of practice for the fall season.

The construction site is the southeast corner of La Rue and Dairy roads, south of the Dairy Barn and across from the Tercero residence halls. The plan includes a scoeboard, seating area, bike parking and sustainable landscaping on the perimeter.

The field will be smooth and fast, USA Field Hockey-certified, like most other collegiate playing surfaces across the country. The team has been playing in Aggie Stadium, where the artificial turf has longer blades, designed for football and lacrosse, but which makes for slower-paced field hockey.

The team has not played all its 鈥渉ome鈥 games at the stadium; many east coast teams would not come here, because of the field, so the Aggies sometimes borrowed the 澳门六合彩资料库 Berkeley and Stanford fields for 鈥渉ome鈥 games.

鈥淭his is an exciting step in our program鈥檚 development, and we couldn't have done it without those that share our vision, said Tumey, referring to donors, parents, the Athletics Department, and the campus.

鈥淎nd while we are able to move forward with the project, I see this as the first step. We need to identify additional financial support, and our fundraising efforts are just beginning."

Mural project in the works, and you can help!

Community meetings are scheduled from Wednesday through Sunday (Feb. 19-23) to gather ideas for a mural that will be painted in the tunnel that runs under the Union Pacific line between the arboretum and south Davis.

The project team said the mural's overall theme has already been selected: the natural history of Putah Creek. The mural's primary goal, according to the team, is to enhance the connection between the arboretum鈥檚 new California Native Plant GATEway Garden (at the east end of the arboretum) and the accompanying habitat restoration along the Putah Creek Parkway. 鈥
