NEWS BRIEFS: Brazilian attorneys sharpen skills here

Twenty-two attorneys from Petr贸leo Brasileiro S.A. (Petrobras), Brazil, an international leader in energy production and alternative energy solutions, are studying at the School of Law this month.

The program, offered through the School of Law and 澳门六合彩资料库 Davis Extension鈥檚 Center for International Education, began April 16 and continues through April 27, as part of a long-standing relationship between Petrobras and 澳门六合彩资料库 Davis.

More than 145 Petrobras attorneys have participated in 15 such programs since 2006.

The training meets the specific request of Petrobras for legal education with an explicit focus on U.S. contract law and dispute resolution. Leading attorneys from around the world with expertise in energy law are presenting and discussing case studies as well as simulations from the energy industry.

Beth Greenwood, executive director of the International Programs at the law school, said the Petrobras program is aimed at increasing participants鈥 understanding and ability to use legal terminology within the context of the U.S. legal system.

鈥淏y increasing their understanding of appropriate technical language and effective dispute resolution strategies, these attorneys increase their ability to arbitrate and work within the framework of U.S. contract law, an essential component of doing business in and with the United States,鈥 she said.

Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work

Registration closes at 10 a.m. Monday (April 23) for Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day, which is set for Thursday (April 26). 鈥淲e like to think of it as a mini Picnic Day just for kids,鈥 said Sandy Batchelor, WorkLife coordinator.

TODS, a national event, offers all children the opportunity to see their parents and mentors at work, to see how they contribute to society. At 澳门六合彩资料库 Davis, TODS has the added benefit of exposing children to higher education 鈥 by inviting them to the campus and presenting a variety of activities.

For lunch, you can take the kids to the Segundo, Tercero or Cuarto dining halls, for $2 (with coupon available).

TODS registration is being taken . Some events are limited in space.

We鈥檙e big donors: 1,024 pints

鈥淲e did it again!鈥 The campus community donated more than 1,000 pints of blood in this week鈥檚 two-day AS澳门六合彩资料库D Blood and Marrow Drive, says Brie Leon of the Sacramento-based BloodSource.

鈥淭he gorgeous weather helped encourage students to walk out to our new location (The Pavilion at the ARC) and show their support for saving lives,鈥 Leon said.

She said 1,322 people registered for the blood draw, and 1,024 ended up as donors (with the others excluded for various reasons). The blood draw brought in 364 new donors.

Also, 60 people signed up for the marrow registry.

Rec Pool opens Sunday

The weather is warming and the is opening 鈥 this Sunday (April 22).

Rec Pool hours through June 17: 1 to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and noon to 7 p.m. Friday through Sunday.

Then, from June 18 to Sept. 30: 2 to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and noon to 7 p.m. Friday through Sunday.

Admission is free for 澳门六合彩资料库 Davis students and other members of the Activities and Recreation Center, and $4.50 for the general public (18 and older).
