Sandra Carlson, professor of paleobiology in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, has been named the recipient of the 2016 Encourage Award from the Association for Women Geoscientists, or AWG. Carlson is also the faculty director of CalTeach/Mathematics and Science Teaching Programs, or MAST.

The association鈥檚 president, Blair Schneider, said Carlson鈥檚 鈥渓eadership initiative has helped to not only continue to foster the relationship between AWG and the Paleo Society, but to bring a whole new level of recognition to our awards for young women pursuing careers in paleontology.鈥
The Encourage Award is one of three honors given annually by AWG to women and men who advance participation of women in the geosciences.
Charles (Chuck) Fadley, distinguished professor of physics and senior faculty scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, has been elected as an honorary member of the International Science Committee of the International Vacuum Ultraviolet and X-Ray Physics (VUVX) Conferences.
The triennial VUVX conferences deal with all aspects of electron and X-ray spectroscopy. Fadley鈥檚 new status on the International Science Committee recognizes his fundamental contributions to the field of condensed matter physics and spectroscopy.
Gail Patricelli has moved up from member to elective member of the American Ornithologists Union. Fellows of the organization vote in elective members in recognition of their significant contributions to ornithology and/or service to the organization.
Patricelli is a professor in the Department of Evolution and Ecology. She and her lab team study a variety of topics related to behavioral ecology, bioacoustics and conservation in birds.
Scott Lanyon, president of the American Ornithologists Union, noted his organization鈥檚 tradition going back more than 100 years, of 鈥渇ormally recognizing excellence among our colleagues working to advance our understanding of birds and contributing to our scientific knowledge in order to conserve them.鈥
U.S. Water Polo recently presented its Monte Nitzkowski Distinguished Men鈥檚 Coaching Award to 澳门六合彩资料库 Davis head coach Daniel Leyson.
His team was 6-0 in Western Water Polo Association play and 18-8 overall last season, for the program鈥檚 best winning percentage since 2007 (22-7). In addition, the 2015 team earned a peak national ranking of No. 9 鈥 matching the program鈥檚 highest mark ever, last achieved in 2011.
Leyson has a 48-38 record in his three seasons with the Aggies. His U.S. Water Polo award is named in honor of longtime Olympic head coach Monte Nitzkowski, who guided Team USA to medals in 1972 and 1984.
Lina Layiktez, immediate past chair of Davis campus Staff Assembly, is the new chair-elect of the . She鈥檒l be chair elect for a year, then move up to chair. Layitktez is the director of Conference and Event Services.
Shuyang Ling, a doctoral student in the Department of Mathematics, received the 2016 Mathematical and Physical Sciences Dean鈥檚 Graduate Student Prize in June. Winners are chosen for their high academic standing, scholarly achievement and a record of outstanding undergraduate teaching.
The $250 award is funded through gifts from Francisco Samaniego, professor of statistics, and others. This year, Ling also received the Alice Leung Scholarship in Mathematics, awarded annually to a graduate student who shows exceptional promise in all aspects of mathematics.
