LAURELS: Food protection group recognizes Bruhn

The International Association for Food Protection recently accorded honorary lifetime membership to Christine Bruhn, Cooperative Extension specialist emerita. The presentation took place in during the association鈥檚 annual meeting, held this year in Portland.

The citation reads in part, 鈥淒r. Bruhn has brought honor to the profession through outstanding leadership in communicating science-based information that advances food protection. Dr. Bruhn helps the public, health professionals and the media more fully comprehend safety issues inherent in a range of food technologies. Her research on consumer attitudes and behavior has been reported in over 160 peer reviewed publications and other creative works.鈥

At the Portland meeting, July 26-29, Bruhn and postdoc researcher Yaohua 鈥淏etty鈥 Feng presented a poster titled, 鈥淓ffect of food irradiation messages on purchase intent,鈥 exploring the impact of descriptive messages on consumer interest in purchasing food irradiated for safety.

Pamela Wu, director of marketing and communications at the School of Law, has been named member of the year in the Asian American Journalists Association. The award, presented at the AAJA鈥檚 national convention in San Francisco in August, recognizes excellence in service to the journalism industry and the association.

AAJA is an educational and professional organization of more than 1,600 members across the United States and Asia working to increase the ranks of Asian American and Pacific Islander journalists and news managers, and advocating for fair and balanced coverage of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.

Wu serves on AAJA鈥檚 national board and is co-director of the association鈥檚 Media Institute program. She continues her work in journalism as the substitute host for Insight, the daily public affairs program on Capital Public Radio.

She came to 澳门六合彩资料库 Davis in 2009 after more than a decade as a television news reporter and anchor. She received the Unity Award in Media for political reporting, and an Emmy nomination for her work as host of the cultural affairs program Common Ground on Sacramento鈥檚 KCRA-TV.

At the School of Law, she is responsible for strategic communications in marketing, media relations, social media and website development.

Newly elected fellows from among our faculty:

Mary Delany and Kirk Klasing, professors, Department of Animal Science 鈥 Recognized by the Poultry Science Association for dedication and commitment to poultry science and the broader poultry community.

Delany is a professor of developmental genetics whose research focuses on avian telomere biology, with chicken being the primary organism under study. She holds the John and Joan Fiddyment Endowed Chair in Agriculture and also serves as executive associate dean of the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.

Klasing specializes in the impact of nutrition on immunochemistry and disease resistance; immunologic basis of stress; and nutrition and metabolic adaptation of carnivorous, granivorous and nectivorous birds.

鈥 Nesrin Sarigul-Klijn, professor, mechanical and aerospace engineering 鈥 Recognized by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers for her significant research contributions in the fields of mechanical, biomedical and aerospace engineering, especially in the areas of fluid-structure interactions, acoustics and noise control, vibrations, aerospace vehicles and human spine health.
