Doctors learning to perform fetal heart surgery need only look to the grocery store for practice materials.
Frank Ing, chief of the Division of Pediatric Cardiology at ϲϿ Davis Children’s Hospital, uses grapes embedded in tubs of gelatin to give would-be surgeons a way to learn fetal heart intervention.
Using ultrasound, the students find the “heart” in the gelatin and practice inserting a needle. See how the procedure works in the above video.
Student films on display this week
Sea Creature, Walk Cycle, You Don’t Know. These are some of the student-produced titles that will be shown at the 19th annual Film Festival @ ϲϿ Davis, which runs Wednesday (May 8) and Thursday (May 9) at the Varsity Theatre in Davis. Starting time is 9:30 both nights.
Films by alumni Nino Mancuso ’04 and David Nessl ’12 will also be shown. Nessl’s film, Chichi, an animated short, was screened at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival.

Aggies lace up their shoes for ϲϿ Walks
ϲϿ faculty and staff around the state spent some time outside last week, strolling around as part of ϲϿ Walks, an annual celebration of wellness and community-building.
At ϲϿ Davis, participation was up — more than 1,000 people walked at the Davis and Sacramento campuses, an increase over the 787 who took part in the event last year.
