Davis Police Release Fatality Accident Report

The ϲϿ Davis community continues to mourn the death of Trisha “Tris” Nicole Sabay Yasay, a junior majoring in plant science. We send our deep condolences to her family. She is  and by the campus community for her vision, energy and enthusiasm for taking what she was learning at ϲϿ Davis and using it to better the world.

We have received the accident report, which was conducted independently by the Davis Police Department, which has a major accident team. We understand that multiple factors contributed to this tragic accident, and we will be examining the report so that we can address these factors.

Chancellor May has asked for a work group to review our policies, procedures and programs that pertain to vehicle and bicycle education and safety, and to make recommendations for any changes needed to minimize the possibility of future accidents.

ϲϿ Davis has long been a place where bicycles and vehicles share the campus, and we are continually looking for ways to improve our campus environment. We have mandatory driver safety training programs for employees who use university vehicles both on and off campus, and bicycle education and safety programs for the campus community. We will continue to invest in these important programs and are committed to constant evaluation and improvement of our practices.

We have a postvention committee and guidelines that help us support families like the Yasays and the campus community when a student dies. We know that none of this can take away the grief of losing a family member, a friend and a member of our ϲϿ Davis community.
