Apartment fire contained quickly

The °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê×ÊÁÏ¿â Davis Fire Department responded to a fire in the campus’s Solano Park Apartments at about 11:30 p.m. Saturday (May 8). Firefighters rescued a tenant who was transported to °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê×ÊÁÏ¿â Davis Medical Center. The fire was brought under control within a few minutes of the rescue being completed.  

Other residents of the apartment block were being temporarily rehoused. The cause of the fire was under investigation by the offices of the campus fire marshal and state fire marshal.

Police ID John Troidl as crash victim

The driver who died in a single-vehicle crash on Old Davis Road last week has been identified as John Troidl, 66, who had taught public health and health care management at °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê×ÊÁÏ¿â Davis and other universities.

Campus police said Troidl was driving under Interstate 80 when his vehicle struck the overpass pillars at about 11:15 a.m. Wednesday (May 5). A passerby reported the crash, saying the vehicle was filling with smoke.

Police and fire units responded, pulling the driver from the vehicle and performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation until an ambulance arrived. The ambulance crew discontinued CPR and confirmed the fatality. 

Campus police are investigating the incident in conjunction with the California Highway Patrol. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê×ÊÁÏ¿â Davis police, 530-752-1727.

The campus issued an Aggie Alert about the closure of Old Davis Road and another at about 2:15 p.m. to say the road had been reopened.

Troidl had worked as a principal and consultant in health services management for 36 years, according to his LinkedIn profile. It lists teaching posts at °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê×ÊÁÏ¿â Davis Continuing and Professional Education and °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê×ÊÁÏ¿â Davis Health, °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê×ÊÁÏ¿âLA Extension, Sacramento State University and the University of San Francisco.

He held a Ph.D. in health services and policy analysis from the School of Public Health at °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê×ÊÁÏ¿â Berkeley, an MBA in health care finance from the °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê×ÊÁÏ¿âLA Anderson School of Management, and a bachelor’s degree in biology from Brown University.
