THE ARBORETUM: Storytime takes an Expedition to Africa

Folk Music Jam Session — Pull out your fiddles, guitars, mandolins, penny whistles, pipes, flutes, squeezeboxes — you name it! — and join your fellow musicians during the lunch hour for a little bluegrass, old-time, blues, Celtic, klezmer and other world music. All skill levels welcome. Listeners, too! Noon-1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 1 and 15, .  

Storytime Through the Seasons: Expedition to Africa — Reading program — stories and nature of Africa — for children and families, in the Acacia Grove. Presented by the Arboretum Ambassadors. 1-3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 3, meet at arboretum headquarters, , La Rue Road (rain loocation: 146 .).

Native American Uses of Plants — Guided tour of the Native American Contemplative Garden to learn about traditional uses of native plants. 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, meet at the .

Early Spring in the Terrace Garden — Look for signs of spring and take home ideas of plants for your own containers and beds. 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, , next to Whole Foods market in the Davis Commons shopping center, First Street and Richards Boulevard.

Native Californian Elderberry Flute-Making Workshop — Antonio Flores, East Bay Regional Parks docent, leads this program, teaching participants how to make and play a Native Californian elderberry flute, while also talking about the culture of flute making. He also will talk about the endangered elderberry beetle. All materials will be supplied; please bring sharpened pocketknives. All ages are invited; adults must supervise their young children. 1-3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 26, 146 .

SPRING PLANT SALES

The arboretum announced its schedule of spring plant sales: three on Saturday and one on Sunday, each from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Arboretum Teaching Nursery.

The season begins with the Member Sale, Saturday, March 9. Not a member? No worries — you can join at the gate!

The other three sales are open to the public:
